Galway Theatre Festival 2016

So wraps up another collaboration with the awesome Galway Theatre Festival! Just like last year, we sent a call out for films that were made in one take, and on the first take, to simulate the feeling of stage performance; good preparation is key! If you make a mistake, you have to roll with it! This gives a very different energy to a performance and provides a whole new challenge to filmmakers, forcing them to think outside the box. Fortunately, our submitters rose to the challenge and created some excellent short films. Here are the films we screened on the night, including links to those that are currently online.

  1. 1. The Craic – submitted by  Kenny Gaughan

Our first film was a comedy sketch about a group of obnoxious lads on a pub crawl made by our very own Kenny Gaughan.

  2. 2. Rendezvous – submitted by Conor Geoghegan

This short was, impressively, entirely improvised! It depicted an odd meet up of two men near a Galway canal.

  3. 3. Doped Up – submitted by Daniel Clarke

Our next film  of the night was a comedy sketch submitted by Little Cinema regular Daniel Clarke, and can be watched below!

    4.  Window Man – submitted by Matt Burke

Next up was Window Man by Matt Burke, which featured a sinister and absurd repair man. Watch it here!

    5. Situation – submitted by Luke Morgan

Taking us up the the break was a comedy by Luke Morgan which might make you think twice about using bad grammar…

    Watch Situation here!

    6. Lullaby – submitted by Matthew Blayney

After the break was a very creepy horror film called Lullaby, centered on a couple listening in to a baby monitor!

    7. Still The Government – submitted by  Nicholas Fitzgerald

Next up was a very funny political comedy, with a great “The Thick Of It” vibe!

    8. All My Friends – submitted by Jonathan Folan

This clever short depicted a woman feeling lonely at a very odd house party.

    9. Stirring The Pot – submitted by John Valters Paintner

This hilarious short comedy was adapted BY John Valters Paintner from a play originally performed at The Theatre Room, and can be viewed right here!

    Watch Stirring The Pot here!

    10. Substance – submitted by Oisin Robbins

Our last film of the night combined film with live performance in a very unique way, with actor Luke Morgan actually performing live in the room alongside the film!

    Watch Substance here!

So ended another great collaboration with the Galway Theatre Festival. We’re looking forward to working with them again next year!

March 2016 Recap

Hello one and all,

We’re back again with our recap of another great month at Little Cinema! We really want to thank everyone who came along last Wednesday. We’ve said it before, but it can’t be stressed enough; great audiences like you are what make Little Cinema special! We’re so grateful for your continued support and look forward to seeing you all back again. For anyone who couldn’t make it along, or who just wants a repeat viewing, here are the links to the currently available films screened at the last Little Cinema.12439404_514732548717746_1886486626876043319_n

  1. 1.

Our first film of the evening is a short made for last years collabortaion with Galway Theatre Festival by the Little Cinema team. Hostage was made in one take, with seven cameras rolling, and a huge cast and crew! It was a hugely challenging shoot, but also a very fun one and we’re very proud of the result. We’re currently looking for more films in the same vein for this years Galway Theatre Festival, so why not watch Hostage and hopefully it’ll help give you some inspiration!

  2. 2.

Next up was a music video made by  Maika for Al’Tarba’s Just Like Ants. Skilfully edited together from old stock footage in only seven days, this video was a perfect accompaniment for the song.

  3. 3.

Our third film of the night was a hilarious sketch from Graham Patterson called How Do You Play Football? If you’ve ever wanted to become a pro soccer player, then look no further than this tutorial video for all the tips you’ll need…

  4. 4.

Following Graham was Katie Gardner, with her very first film Bicycle Day, a comedy about a man trying to find the perfect bike! We’re looking forward to seeing more from Katie!

  5. 5.

Last before the break was the return of Colm Dunne with another great music video, this time for a song called Peggy by local artist Dylan Murphy. This was taken from a series filmed in the Blue Note pub in Galway.

  6. 6.

After the break, we had a film from another regular submitter. Woodworm, by Justin Wade, is a film about depression and loneliness. Woodworm is currently not online, and we wish Justin all the best with the film on the festival circuit!

  7. 7.

Next up was a music video from Lakshika Serashine for the Until April’s song I wanna Be Yours. Anyone who has seen any of Lakshika’s work will be familair with his beautiful photography, and this film was no exception!

  8. 8.

Next was our very own Kenny Gaughan, with a short comedy sketch about a guy trying to tell a joke. The film got a huge laugh on the night, and has been doing well online since it was uploaded last week.
Click here to watch The Joke .

  9. 9.

Our second last film of the night was made by Meghan McKeon-Joyce, called St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This observational documentary did a great job at capturing the energy of the day. Its not online yet, but we’ll post a link as soon as it goes up!

  10. 10.

Our last film of the evening, made by Matt Kavanagh, was a documentary called Whats Your Favourite Irish Film, in which Matt went to the streets of Galway to ask that very question!

And thats it for another month. Huge thanks to all the film submitters for their hard work! Just a reminder that we won’t have a screening in April, but will be back on May 5th with a special night of films made in collaboration with Galway Theatre Festival. We’re currently looking for films made for that screening, but they have to be made in one take and on the first take! If you’d like to submit, get in contact with us ASAP as spaces are filling rapidly!

    Thanks for reading,
    Liam, Kenny and Julia.

February 2016 Recap

It’s hard to believe how fast the year is going… Christmas feels like it could have been last week, but here we are recapping our second screening of the year! Little Cinema February was one of those beautiful screenings that had lots of different styles and genres on screen and a truly great crowd too! Let’s look back at the great short films screened last Wednesday. Where possible, the films themselves are also available to rewatch.little cinema february01

1.

Our first film of the night was “Cosan na Smaointe” submitted to us by Cliodhna Nic Dhonnacha. This moving Irish-language documentary told the story of a woman who went to school in a Sisters of Mercy convent before going on to become a teacher herself.

2.

Our second film of the evening was “Binge” submitted by Stephen Staunton. “Binge” is a comedy short about a man trying to keep up to date with a popular fantasy TV show, which eventually takes over his entire life! It also deserves special mention for great VFX, showing that anything is possible, even on small budgets!

3.

Film number three was “Regicide” submitted by Cian Boland. This documentary was a behind the scenes look at the making of a student film.

4.

Next up was another great animation from regular submitter Diarmaid Hanley. His film “Lords” was a bizarre conversation between two men discussing the existence of the soul. Typically hilarious stuff from Diarmaid!

5.

Taking us up to the break was a film called “Shir Madness”submitted by Emily Murray, Aising Ni Chulain and Marie Lecoq. This documentary gave a fascinating insight into the world of burlesque, with interviews from a variety of performers.

6.

After a short break, we were back with a music video from Colm Dunne. Created for the song “When Mark Met Tom” by local artist Fia Rua, this video, shot on a sunny day in Salthill, had some puppets act out the narrative of the songs lyrics. Puppets by “Yourmans Puppets”

7.

Next up was “Stare” by Ana Levisky. This captivating documentary explores reactions to works of art in various settings and the power that art can have wherever it is found. Click here to watch “Stare”

8.

Our penultimate film of the night was submitted by Paul O’Mahony, long time Little Cinema audience member and first time submitter! Paul’s film “Paul Does Make-Up” was a very informative video with some great tips on how to make the most of your make-up.

9.

Closing out the night was another documentary, submitted by Graham Bollard called “Dirty Laundry.” This amazing film documented the filmmaker discussing his father, whom he never met, with his mother, aunt and grandmother. “Dirty Laundry” was a perfect finale to a great night of short films.

So ended another night at Little Cinema. To those who submitted and those who came along to be part of the night, huge thanks! Be sure to share these films with your friends, and we’ll see you in March!
